Why the Ocean Matters

Covering 72 percent of the Earth and supplying half its oxygen, the ocean is Earth’s life support system—and it’s in danger. Global climate change, pollution, habitat destruction, invasive species, and a large decrease in ocean fish stocks. These damages to the ocean are so extensive that more than 40 percent of the ocean has been severely affected and no area has been left untouched. People are losing the food, jobs, and critical environmental services that a once healthy ocean generated. Ocean Matters Press hopes to restore health and productivity to the ocean by inspiring people, through art, to care and act, by reducing carbon emissions, mitigating the impact of fishing, and promoting the creation of marine protected areas.

Is there another way to tell the global climate story that would get the world to act?

As an artist and writer, this is the question that keeps me up at night. Storytellers are incredibly important. People who use imagination — poets and artists — must get better at describing the problems, the real menace of what we are facing. We must shift cultural. We must tell new stories, create new art, and learn to live differently in order to create a system that values the well-being of others and of the Earth.
